Acoustic Artwork

Veronika Plevová

This bachelor’s thesis explores the use of recycled cork stoppers to create a modular acoustic artwork. The author draws on her personal experience with cork and inspiration from an Erasmus stay in Portugal, where she discovered the unique properties of the material — its renewability, lightness, and aesthetic texture. Stoppers that usually end up as waste after opening a bottle are here transformed into a functional and aesthetic interior element.

The final design consists of a variable composition of 30 panels with an organic relief that diffuses sound, plays with light and shadow, and symbolically references the wine slopes of South Moravia. The project thus closes the recycling cycle — cork returns to wine bars and restaurants as a functional object.

Within the SHIFT exhibition, the Acoustic Artwork represents the transformation of everyday waste into a valuable design element. It demonstrates how design can approach material not only as a medium of aesthetic expression but also as a tool of environmental responsibility and innovation in interior acoustics.
