Morphology - Light Installation

Alexandra Likhacheva

Morphology is a master’s thesis project developed in collaboration with Lanik, exploring the potential of foam ceramics with unique optical properties in the context of an artistic installation.

The series of four light objects follows a narrative line between construction and deconstruction — from a solid form filled with light to its gradual disintegration and subsequent rebirth. Here, light functions as the central pillar that shapes matter from within and becomes the primary medium of expression.

Within the SHIFT exhibition, the project embodies the transformation of an industrial material into a medium of poetic and existential storytelling. The installation forms a circular cycle without a clear beginning or end, evoking the infinite loop of life and death. Morphology illustrates how design and art can respond to destabilizing experiences of the present — from personal loss to global crises — and transform them into a fragile yet hopeful visual metaphor of renewal.

The project also raises the question of how new materials and technologies may reshape the future of architectural and artistic installations. Morphology suggests that the boundaries between industry and art are dissolving, creating space for new forms of collaboration and aesthetic expression.
