Ferrista - Espresso Machine

Martina Hrnčiříková

The Ferrista project focuses on the design of a modern lever espresso machine that bridges the traditional ritual of manual coffee preparation with contemporary users’ demands for simplicity, compactness, and aesthetics.

The aim was to offer an authentic espresso-making experience while responding to the need for space efficiency in the home — for example, by concealing less frequently used elements such as the steam wand. The design is grounded in market research, user behavior analysis, and an iterative design process, with an emphasis on ergonomics, visual appeal, and principles of sustainability.

The project represents a transformation of a common household appliance through an unconventional horizontal composition. In doing so, the coffee machine not only responds to current trends in the design of domestic appliances but also demonstrates how traditional everyday objects can be reimagined as innovative, space-saving solutions.

At the same time, the work raises broader questions about the role of design in daily rituals. Ferrista illustrates that even ordinary appliances can carry cultural and symbolic value, becoming instruments that connect aesthetics, sustainability, and the lifestyle of contemporary society.
